Creating a fully inclusive play space for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) in Norfolk was both a sensitive and rewarding project. EACH offers crucial care and respite for children with various, often terminal, illnesses.
The primary objective was to design a play area that was fully accessible and inclusive. We therefore specifically tailored to meet the unique needs of these children. The site posed challenges as it was previously undeveloped and heavily sloped, requiring precise grading and leveling to ensure safety and accessibility.
Proludic’s team handled the design and installation of the play equipment. Meanwhile, a landscape architecture firm developed the master plan for the play area and its surroundings.
The design thoughtfully incorporated contemporary elements, addressing the site’s changing levels while prioritising safety and accessibility. Inclusive play equipment, tactile and sensory elements, and moving play components were carefully chosen to accommodate children of all abilities. Sloping pathways with a 1 in 20 gradient provided multiple access points and easy movement throughout the space.
Community involvement played a key role. Feedback from resident children ensured the play space met their diverse needs and those of their families. Funded by various external sources, including hospice patrons and local businesses, the project culminated in a state-of-the-art, fully inclusive play area. This space now offers joy and respite to children of varying abilities, fulfilling EACH’s vision and positively impacting the community.
We are immensely grateful to Proludic for the fantastic new playground at The Nook. It has brought immense joy and smiles to our children, providing a safe, inclusive, and engaging space for them to play. This playground has become a cherished part of our hospice, creating precious memories for families.
