James Seely Park has long been a cherished community space, but its recent redevelopment has turned it into a vibrant, futuristic playground for children of all ages. Completed in two carefully planned phases, the project introduces cutting-edge play equipment while honouring the area’s rich mining heritage. The highlight is the Metropolis range. This is a science fiction-inspired collection of play structures that transport children into a world of flying machines and submarines.
The redevelopment was structured to cater to different age groups. Phase One introduced high-energy equipment for older children, including a double cableway and a tall climbing net offering panoramic views of the park. Phase Two focused on inclusivity, adding accessible play features for younger children and families.
At the heart of this transformation is the Metropolis range from Proludic, inspired by the sci-fi works of Jules Verne. Its futuristic aesthetic, with black, brown and copper colour schemes and stainless steel accents, creates an eye-catching space that sparks creativity and adventure.
The Magic of Metropolis
The Metropolis-themed equipment transforms Seely Park into an adventure zone with:
- The Metropolis Tower (J47101) – Standing over 4 meters tall, this structure required special planning approval but has become a park landmark, offering climbing challenges, slides, and lookout points.
- The Submarine (J47450) – Encouraging nautical-themed play and storytelling.
- The Dragster (J3601) – Designed for high-energy, fast-paced fun.
- Custom-Designed Inclusive Seesaw (J987) – Ensuring children of all abilities can enjoy interactive play.
The themed wetpour surfacing enhances the immersive experience with colourful wet-pour rubber that mirrors the cogs and pulleys of the Metropolis range, subtly nodding to Seely Park’s mining past while embracing the future.
Engineering a Playful Landscape
Transforming the steep park terrain required major engineering efforts. Proludic’s contractors excavated 50 tonnes of soil to create a level and safe play space. Structural reinforcements ensure the play equipment’s durability, making the park a long-term community asset.
This redevelopment was possible through funding from FCC Environment and the local council. Local primary schools played a key role in shaping the project, with children participating in creative workshops to help select the final design. Their input ensured the play area truly reflects the community’s vision.
Honouring Local Heritage
While Metropolis brings a futuristic touch, it also pays tribute to Seely Park’s coal mining history. Until the 1980s, the village housed a thriving colliery, and the intricate cogs and wheels in the play structures celebrate this industrial heritage, reflecting the once-prominent headstocks that once towered over the village. The blend of past and future makes Seely Park’s transformation truly unique.

A Lasting Legacy
With its innovative design, inclusive features, and strong community ties, Seely Park’s redevelopment showcases the power of thoughtful planning. The Metropolis range has transformed the park into a hub of adventure and exploration. Whether soaring on futuristic flying machines or diving into imaginary underwater escapades, children now have an inspiring space to play and create memories.
As families flock to the revitalised Seely Park, it is clear that this project is more than just a playground upgrade – it is a bridge between history and innovation, fostering joy, creativity, and community spirit for generations to come.
